[UPDATE: free lunch over...]
For a few days now I’ve been using a free shell account at http://www.theunix.info/ and I like it. It’s run by an idealistic Czech student who wants to share his server with others for non-profit purposes and hoping to gain a community of *n*x-loving likeminded people.
His box, a modest Pentium Celeron 2.40GHz, running Fedora Core 6, has a 32mbps redundant internet connection (100mbps for CZ/SK NIX) and is powered by redundant power supply and UPS (including diesel generator).
Basic shell accounts have a 50 MB quota which can be upgraded to 100 MB by sending a one-time donation.
Web publishing (size included in the quota), 1 mySQL database, irssi, screen, gcc, cc, python, perl, php, psybnc, eggdrop, centericq, micq, BitchX, bsd-games and lots more, plus the possibility of having software installed on request.
Community with forum, chat and terminal based games-competitions
