The brand-new Ubuntu has OpenOffice 2.4 in its repositories. In case you prefer to use the more recent OpenOffice.org 3, you can upgrade with these steps.
Get OOo 3 from here.
Remove the older version:
$ sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-core
Go to the directory where the OOo install file was downloaded and uncompress the archive:
$ tar xvzf OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz
$ cd OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS
Install the files:
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
$ cd desktop-integration
$ sudo dpkg -i *
That’s it.
I think you missed a “cd”, you need to cd to OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS
Thanks, I corrected the post.
Golly. I’ve tried a few sites for upgrading–updating my software sources, trying this, and a couple of other hacks–and none of them work. I guess I’ll wait until the next version of Ubuntu comes out. Drat.
@Malcolm: dude, it’s sad how easily you give up.. you’re right.. for people like you it’s better to wait.
thanks alot dude, its work for me with some change to the version : OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379 with ubuntu 8.10
